Pediatric Patients

Pediatric Patients

Since early in the history of medicine, patient, and especially child patient’ safety has been an intrinsic concern for healthcare providers (primum non nocere). However, given the complexity of healthcare systems, it is impossible to fully eliminate the occurrence of errors, accidents, or complications during medical and dental treatment procedures. It is evident that as dentists, the same as other healthcare professionals, we have an ethical and legal obligation to protect our pediatric patients from harm as much as reasonably possible.

There is a need for increased awareness among all pediatric dentists about various patient safety aspects. Estimates indicate that the frequency of adverse effects is in the range of 1:1000–1:10000 of all dental treatment procedures; however, it is completely dependent on the type of procedure and the materials used. Patient safety became a scientific discipline only when we began to record and measure the damage experienced by our patients and to also assess the results of preventive interventions. We need high-quality research to help us better understand the balance of risk and benefit for the dental materials we use and treatments we recommend.
